Recently On Stage ~ Antigone

Posted in Upcoming Shows on April 10, 2012 by nhtheatreproject

NHTP’s Senior Repertory Company presented Antigone May 18-27. A translation by Lewis Galantiere from the play by Jean Anouilh, Antigone was adapted from the original Greek play by Sophocles. Antigone (Jane Merrow), the daughter of Oedipus, is sentenced to execution for burying her dead brother after her uncle, King Creon (Luke Gajewski), declares that his body is to be left for the vultures. The prohibition against desecrating the dead is almost as old as war itself; and recently brought swift punishment to American Marines in Afghanistan. Anouilh’s version of Antigone was first performed in Paris in 1944 during the Nazi occupation. Produced under censorship, the play is clearly a metaphor for the French Resistance movement and its rejection of Nazi authority. Read more »

Recently in NH – Dreaming Again

Posted in Now Playing on March 25, 2012 by nhtheatreproject
Dreaming Again performed to SOLD OUT houses April 13-15 at NHTP in Portsmouth and the production proceeded to move through the Granite State at locations in Laconia, Manchester, Gorham, Concord, Dover, Keene & Claremont through April 23! Thank you to all attended and took part in the discussions about immigration in our state! We are NHTP are proud to have been part of this much-needed NHHC project.

Dreaming Again is an original dramatic play based on stories of Granite State immigrants and refugees who have resettled in New Hampshire over the past 100 years. Drawn from interviews with 30 different contemporary immigrants, as well as literary and historic sources, Dreaming Again celebrates both the joys and difficulties of arriving as a stranger and learning how to be a citizen in your new home. As a recent immigrant says so eloquently: Like a child, I am teaching myself how to dream again.
Commissioned by the NH Humanities Council, Dreaming Again is the culminating project in their three-year Fences & Neighbors initiative.  The play will premiere in Portsmouth at NHTP, and then tour to seven other venues throughout New Hampshire.NHTP artistic director Genevieve Aichele will direct Dreaming Again, assisted by Lydia White-Spunner.  Actors include Dan Acor, Heather Glenn Wixson,  Indira Leal, and CJ Lewis.  Traditional music arranged by music director Agnes Charlesworth performed by musicians Peter Motson, Theo Martey and Cynthia Chatis. Lighting and set design by Meghann Beauchamp, costume design by Michele Macadaeg, stage management by Lindsey Nelson.
